Q5) (c)

Write a brief note on concept of Green Building.

He impacts of the construction industry on human health, energy use, and global climate change (US Green Building Council (USGBC) Research Committee, 2008). There are many definitions of Green building A green building is an environmentally sustainable building, designed, constructed and operated to minimise the total environmental impacts.

The U.S. EPA says "Green building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction. This practice expands and complements the classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort. Green building is also known as a sustainable buildings, sustainable construction, High-performance construction or high performance building." Green Building has become a new building philosophy, pushing the application of more environmentally friendly materials, the implementation of strategies to save resources and lower waste consumption, and the improvement of indoor environmental quality, among others. Green Building is the practice of increasing efficiency with which buildings use resources- energy, water and materials- while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment friendly materials, the implementation of strategies to save resources and lower waste consumption, and the improvement of indoor environmental quality, among others. Green Building is the practice of increasing efficiency with which buildings use resources- energy, water and materials- while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment.

OBJECTIVES OF GREEN BUILDING

  • To minimise the use of energy water and other resources
  • To reduce waste, pollution and environment degradation.
  • To provide advanced mechanical ventilation system to increase air flow and reduce occupant contact with air borne disease.
  • To select proper building material that has low toxicity.
  • To enhance interior lighting quantity by increased use of the day lighting to reduce energy demand and to increase visual comfort.
  • To provide attention to construction maintenance and operation of building to reduce build of microbial agents.
  • To boosts renewable energy resources
  • To improve human health and comfort.

FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF GREEN BUILDING

  • Sustainable site design
  • Energy efficiency
  • Water efficiency
  • Material efficiency
  • Indoor environment quality
