Q3) (b)

Consider two-dimensional square lattice of side 3.0 Å. At what electron momentum values do the sides of first Brillouin zone appear? What is the energy of free electron with this momentum?

Here, h = Plank constant  = 6.62 × 10-34

Here, m = Mass of the electron  = 9.1 × 10-31

Here, a = Side of the lattice  = 3 × 10-10

For first Brillouin zone  K =± π  a

We know,  p =  k

 p = ± h 2 π ·πa

 p = 6.62 × 10-34 2 × 3 × 10-10

 p =1.1 ×  10-24 kg·m / sec

Now, energy of free electron:

 E = P2 2 m

  E =  1.1 × 10-242 2 × 9.1 × 10-31

  E = 6.6 × 10-19 Joule

  E = 6.6 × 10-191.6 × 10-19

  E = 4.2  eV
