Q2) (c)

Enlist various building services and objectives of building services.

Planning of building services is equally important as planning of other spaces. In absence of proper planning of services, the building users or occupants will require frequent addition and alteration of service lines which will result in extra cost and make interior and exterior ugly.
Building services may include all or some of the services listed below:
  1. Water Supply
  2. Drainage
  3. Electrification
  4. Solid waste disposal
  5. Gas supply
  6. Solar water heater
  7. Air cooling
  8. Air conditioning
  9. Telecommunication
  10. Television cabling
  11. Internet data communication
  12. CCTV camera network
  13. Acoustics
  14. Thermal insulation
  15. Sound insulation
  16. Fire safety, etc.

Objectives of building services
  • The distribution of water within a building from the municipal mains or other sources such as groundwater, can be obtained by several water supply piping systems.
  • Such piping systems must however be design to provide uniform flow and in all floors and places.
  • House drainage is provided to dispose off waste water from the house.
  • To dispose off foul matter.
  • To avoid the entry of all gases from the sewer line or the septic tank.
  • To collect and remove waste water to municipal sewer line systematically.
  • To maintain healthy conditions in the house.
  • Electric power supply from substation to the building and in all the appliances is carried by proper cabling and wire circuit.
  • Building finishes such as plastering, pointing, painting, varnishing, distempering, white washing, colour washing, etc. basically perform two functions as mentioned below.
  • This building finishes give a protective coating to the surfaces which protects them from weather effects such as rain water, Frost, heat etc.
  • This building finishes also provide decorative effects which add to the appearance of the surface and buildings as a whole.
  • Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning is the technology of indoor and vehicular environmental comfort.
  • Its goal is to provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality.
  • Ventilation is the process of exchanging or replacing air in any space to provide high indoor air quality which involves temperature control, oxygen replenishment and removal of moisture, odors, smoke, heat, dust, airborne bacteria, carbon dioxide and other gases.
  • Ventilation removes unpleasant smells and excessive moisture, introduces outside air, keeps interior building air circulating and prevents stagnation of the interior air.
  • Ventilation includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building.
