Q5) (b)

Solve the p.d.e. ux + uy = 2x + yu using method of separation of variables.

Let, ux, y = Xx · Yy = X · Y

∂u∂x = X' · Y   &   ∂u∂y = X · Y'

Now, ∂u∂x + ∂u∂y = 2x + yX · Y

⇒X' · Y + X · Y' = 2x + yX · Y

Dividing by X∙Y both the sides,

⇒X' · Y X · Y  + X · Y' X · Y  = 2x + y

⇒X' X   - 2x  = 2y - Y' Y  = k

∎X' X   - 2x = k ⇒ 1 X dX = k + 2xdx ⇒ log X = kx + x2 + c ⇒ X = c1ekx + x2

∎2y - Y' Y   = k ⇒ 1 Y dY = 2y - Kdy ⇒ log Y = y2 - ky + c ⇒ Y = c1e y2 - ky

Solution:

ux, y = X · Y = c1 ekx + x2c2 ey2 - ky
